Come join us in what will prove to be one of the most engaging, thought provoking, and entertaining ethics workshops you've attended. Being engaged in the true spirit of ethics is not just checking off the boxes. In fact, ethical considerations are at the heart of working with clients, especially when complications arise. In this training, we will reference the idea of ethical intelligence* in order to provide a change of mindset when engaging with clients.
This 6 credit live, real-time interactive virtual course provided on the Zoom platform is developed to help social work and counseling professionals learn how to better integrate ethical and legal considerations into their practices. We will work with an updated ethical and caring mindset that will help make being a therapist less stressful when ethical dilemmas arise. There will be live discussions, breakout sessions, and question and answer sessions.
Participants must have access to a device with the ability to use the Zoom online platform (CPU: ARM v6+ or x86; dual-core 1.5 Ghz or above).

About the Instructor
Michael Southers, M.S., LCPC is a licensed clinical professional counselor with 19 years of experience working with people, and with 14 years of experience working in the mental health profession both at a non-profit and currently at his own private practice working with clients. He also provides supervision, and serves as an adjunct faculty at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland. He has worked with a variety of clients including adults and children from mild to severe mental health diagnoses, families, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and people on the autism spectrum, and facilitates groups all while being mindful of best practices and exercising ethical thinking.
Michael’s B.A. degree is in philosophy with a concentration in critical thinking and ethics. Michael continues to remain passionate about living an ethical life personally and professionally, and has maintained an extensive background in ethical considerations involving healthcare, diverse populations, and business.
Learning Objectives
1. Participants will be able to identify and list legal and ethical obligations when providing therapy as relevant to state and federal laws.
2. Participants will be able to review and describe confidentiality requirements for clients, distance counseling, and working with children.
3. Participants will be able to define multi-cultural awareness as it pertains to ethics and will be able to list personal barriers that may arise during work with clients.
4. Participants will be able to name current procedures and policies regarding informed consent and best practices to protect the clinician and client.
5. Learn and summarize the requirements for giving and receiving ethical supervision and peer consultation.

Note: There are no posttest requirements, however, attendance for the full day and a completed evaluation is required to obtain 6 continuing education credits. Attendance will be taken using the zoom platform and no partial credit will be available. Evaluations will be provided via a Google Form to your email and submitted electronically. Continuing Education Certificates will be issued within one week of course completion by email.

Being an Ethical Therapist without Terror: Knowing the Risks and Providing Ethical Care to Our Clients, Course #2761, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program to be offered by Mid-Atlantic Center for Continuing Education as an individual course. Individual courses, not providers, are approved at the course level. State and provincial regulatory boards have the final authority to determine whether an individual course may be accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: 1/6/2020 - 1/6/2022. Social workers completing this course receive 6 Ethics continuing education credits.
The Mid-Atlantic Center for Continuing Education has also been approved by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors for Category A continuing education credits for this course for licensed counselors in Maryland.
