We are honored to offer a training in Spring 2020 with Kate MacShane, LCSW-C, founder and clinical director of the Maryland Center for Gender & Intimacy in Frederick, Maryland. Improving our competence as therapists in our work with LGBQ+, transgender, non-binary, and gender-nonconforming (T/NB/GNC) individuals from a gender-affirming perspective is essential.

This 3 credit in person course will focus on providing affirmative therapy with transgender, nonbinary, gender nonconforming, and otherwise gender-diverse clients. A foundational understanding of the difference between sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation will be presented. Discussion will include development an affirming therapeutic perspective; mental health risks and protective factors for transgender people; special issues in working with transgender and gender nonconforming youth; supporting families through gender transition; and supporting clients in accessing gender-affirming medical treatment. About the Instructor

Kate MacShane, LCSW-C, is the founder and clinical director of the Maryland Center for Gender & Intimacy in Frederick, Maryland, where she specializes in sexuality and gender. Kate is a queer, cisgender, biracial therapist who practices from an anti-oppressive framework that incorporates feminist, queer, anti-white-supremacist, and other liberatory perspectives. Kate’s approach to working with clients incorporates relational, psychodynamic, attachment-based, and narrative therapies. Kate is a member of the World Professional Association of Transgender Health (WPATH) and the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists. She received a MSW from the Smith College School for Social Work and an M.Ed. from American University.

- Privilege and power with respect to sexuality and gender in therapy

- Barriers to treatment for transgender and gender-nonconforming people

- The affirmative stance

9:25-9:55:

- Gender terminology

- Understanding gender dysphoria

9:55-10:50

- Overview of gender transition (social and medical)

- The role of the clinician in providing support for clients in transition

10:50-11:30

- Case studies

- Special considerations for children & adolescents

The cost to attend this training is $69, until March 1st, in which it will increase to $79. The cost of this event includes coffee/tea, continental breakfast from local vendors, afternoon snacks and certificate. Course Completion and CE info.  

Social workers and Counselors must attend the entire course and complete a course evaluation to earn a CE credit. Certificates will be handed out at the end of the workshop. 

This training has been approved by the Maryland Board of Professional Counselors for Category A continuing education credits for this course for licensed counselors in Maryland. It has also been approved by the Board of Social Work Examiners for Category I continuing education units. The Mid-Atlantic Center for Continuing Education maintains full responsibility for this program.
